You might have seen an ad for a cheap car from Japan pop up online, and wondered what the catch is.

Well, that was exactly the thought going in for a UK-based YouTuber, who decided to satisfy his curiosity by taking a closer look.

Taking a deep dive into some Japanese car listings, he initially expected to uncover some tricks.

Instead, he ended up finding deals that seemed almost too good to be true.

A cheap car in Japan is often very well-maintained

For years, Japanese imports had carried a mixed reputation, often seen as cheap alternatives with a hint of risk.

But for YouTuber High Peak Autos, that perception began to crack the moment a pristine, low-mileage Mercedes appeared on screen.

It looked barely used, almost showroom fresh despite its age.

He was visibly surprised and even admitted that the narrative around these cars may have been wrong all along.

Then came the real eye-opener.

As he scrolled through Japanese listings online, things felt odd.

It was almost like uncovering a glitch in the system.

He found a 2017 Mercedes S-Class for under £8,000, or $10,500, which was pretty wild.

Another with just 30,000 miles was listed for around £12,000 ($15,800)

Each listing seemed to raise the same question: how could these cars be so cheap?

Compared to UK prices, the gap was enormous, and the condition of many examples only made it more puzzling.

The answer lies in Japan’s unique car culture

High costs for fuel, toll roads, and parking often discourage long-distance driving within the country.

In addition, strict inspections push owners to maintain their vehicles meticulously.

As a result, there is a steady stream of well-preserved cars with surprisingly low mileage entering the market.

This combination felt like it was tailor-made for savvy buyers willing to look overseas.

Of course, the dream came with fine print.

After all, importing a car is never as simple as the headline price suggests.

Shipping fees, taxes, and registration costs can quickly pile up, sometimes wiping out the initial savings.

The YouTuber knew this all too well, recalling past imports where unexpected expenses crept in at every stage.

However, there’s still value to be had, especially if you’re keen on importing Japanese Kei cars for your own use.
