A man who took a McLaren F1 on a 1,000-mile road trip revealed the hidden realities of driving such a car.
When Ed Bolian drove the McLaren F1 as part of the McLaren F1 Owners Club through the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, it was like a dream come true for him.
But it wasn’t without its challenges.
He laid out several things that took him by surprise about the car.

What people don’t tell you about driving a McLaren F1
For Ed Bolian, the host of VINwiki, driving in this McLaren F1 was the perfect birthday gift.
It’s not like Ed is a stranger to awesome cars, though, like this Bugatti Veyron once owned by Justin Bieber.

And who can forget this Victoria’s Secret Lamborghini?
So for him to hype up a car, you’d know it was a big deal.
As you might expect, driving such an elite car would come with its own set of surprises.
In a follow-up video, Bolian listed out a few for his viewers.
For a start, the F1’s glass has a metallic coating that blocks cell signals, meaning that GPS and navigation don’t work properly unless an external antenna is fitted.
Then there’s the matter of getting in and out of the car, which was extremely awkward.

Perhaps not as awkward as it was for Johnny Cash to enter his Ferrari 308.
He also said that the air conditioning was ineffective, meaning the windows had to be down for airflow – not ideal in a car speeding along country roads.
Other challenges that came along with this car
The three-seat layout is pretty strange, as it positions the driver in the center.
For driver visibility, it’s best for a passenger to sit in the left seat.
There’s also limited storage space, and the VIN is hidden beneath floor mats and carpet which is difficult for law enforcement checks.

So in some ways, this car is impractical to drive.
But all of that pales in comparison to the joy that Bolian got from driving it.
“Is it the best road trip car on the planet? The answer is both obviously not and absolutely yes,” he declared.
