This man modded his $669 car to try and get it to beat a $26,750 sports car on a racetrack.

The cheaper car was a Toyota MR2, while the pricier car was a Lotus Elise S1.

In order to give the MR2 a fighting chance out on the track, YouTuber Jack McNeill made a whole bunch of modifications.

But would that be enough to secure a victory?

The baseline lap times showed that the MR2 had some catching up to do.

With its original 1.8L engine, it secured a 59.93-second lap – 3.7 seconds behind the Lotus Elise at 50.22 seconds.

There was only one thing for it; it was time for the MR2 to get an automotive makeover.

We’re talking the works, from engine swap to brakes and suspension.

The MR2 received the 2ZZ-GE engine from a later Toyota, capable of producing 190hp.

This was a huge jump from the original starting point of 134hp, and even dwarfed the Lotus with its 160hp.

After modifications, the MRZ was producing 173hp on a dyno test.

It also received BC racing coil-overs, an EBC Truck brake kit, Whiteline anti-roll bars, new, wider, lightweight wheels, and bucket seats.

This was a race car through and through.

But looks aren’t everything – how would things pan out on the racetrack?

Would the MR2 outpace the Lotus Elise S1 in a lap?

When it came down to it, the MR2 did a lap in 48.02 seconds, beating out the Lotus by 2.2 seconds.

So that sounds like a mission accomplished to us.

“That is blisteringly quick!” McNeill said.

“That seems way too fast, that’s 2.2 seconds. That is ridiculous!

“This is the best car ever!”

There’s an undeniable thrill that comes along with beating a lap record.

The driver of this Xiaomi SU7 got to experience that when he outpaced the Rimac Nevera at Germany’s Nürburgring.

The Xiaomi SU7 Ultra also smashed records at the German track, outpacing both Mercedes-AMG and Porsche.
