EV pickups come in all different shapes and sizes, but forget the classic Tesla Cybertruck, there’s a new and improved kid on the block, and that’s the Slate truck.
After one EV enthusiast jumped behind the wheel of the Jeff Bezos-backed pickup, his life was transformed.
According to them, gone are the days of ordering a Cybertruck; the Slate is here to stay.
And after you see just what this EV can do, you may shift your gear too.

The Tesla Cybertruck was once an EV gem
Back in 2023, we saw the Tesla Cybertruck burst onto the car scene.
The new EV pickup hit headlines thanks to its unique design and different capabilities, but after one EV editor at The Independent took delivery of a Slate truck, his head was spun.
In fact, he went as far as confessing that he’s going to cancel his Cybertruck order, and instead has put his name down for a Slate EV.

The EV truck offers ways of customization like never before, and can literally be designed for you, by you.
The company offers a three-step process to making the Slate truck your own, and it really is as easy as one, two, three.
All that’s required is a $50 deposit – which is refundable – then when the time comes to place an order, you need to pick some crucial elements, including the battery and preinstalled accessories.
Then comes the exciting bit of using the ‘Slate Maker’ to choose what accessories, from wraps to bringing your own tech into the cabin, it really is your own canvas.
Forget flashy EVs – the Slate takes things back to basics
One of the most attractive things for the car enthusiast was the whole basic yet effective design of the Slate, with the inside of the cabin taking the form of a simple mount and button.
Yep, you read that right, there is no huge screen or any complicated controls, and even the windows require you to wind them up and down- reverting back to old times.

The editor even explained how the handles have an old, familiar feel to them, bearing a striking resemblance to cars of the 2000s, but in the best way.
The steering wheel and door design all make it very different from a Cybertruck, thanks to stalks on either side of the wheel and an ultra-light feel when the door is open.
You really can change anything, from seat stitching to ride height and even turning it from an EV pickup into an SUV, and it’s these very points of accessibility that made the editor favor the Slate truck over the Tesla Cybertruck.
But, even though it’s basic and clean, the new design doesn’t mean that power has been sacrificed.
The range is projected to be 150 miles, with a longer-range battery pack that ups the ante to 240 miles.
It’s also just 174.6 inches long, alongside boasting a 1,000lbs towing and 1,400lbs payload offering.
Rolling of the production line, the EV takes the form of one base model, and has a projected price to be in the $20,000 range – much cheaper than a Cybertruck, that’s for sure.
Thanks to the combined elements of the basic design, big battery power, capabilities, and price point – it’s a clear win.
