Mazda is building a special version of the Miata MX-5 sports car that will be the ‘ultimate’ version, but only 200 will ever be made.
The Mazda Miata MX-5 is one of the world’s greatest sports cars, and the Japanese manufacturer recently launched its new motorsport-inspired sub-brand, Spirit Racing.
The company’s motorsport knowledge will be translated into road cars, and this new ultimate version of the MX-5 falls under that bracket.
But despite promising the best version of the MX-5 ever made, only 200 of these sports cars will be produced.

What we know so far about the ultimate Mazda Miata
The new car will be the first to be built under the company’s new Spirit Racing brand.
Pre-orders are set to begin later in October 2025, allowing customers to reserve the car ahead of time.
It is also a reminder to fans of the MX-5 that availability will be extremely limited.
Mazda is selling two versions of the sports car based on the ND generation of the MX-5.

The standard Spirit Racing Roadster is capped at 2,200 units.
But it is the Roadster 12R that will be sold in just 200 units, offered through a lottery in Japan.
Both cars will have the same engine under the hood, but the 12R naturally comes with a bit more power.
A super exclusive version of the MX-5
The engine is the 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G inline-four, with 181hp in the standard model.
However, for those who buy the 12R, they will get access to 197hp.
Upgraded cooling and other tweaks help the sports car get that power increase.
With the standard car, you get Brembo brakes, Bilstein dampers, a reinforced tunnel brace, and aero elements.
These elements come from Mazda’s Super Taikyu racing program.

The 12R, meanwhile, adds in Recaro bucket seats, a soft top roof, forged RAYS wheels, plus a serial-numbered engine cover.
Yet despite the upgrades, both cars will still be affordable compared to other sports cars.
The standard model will retail at around $35,000, and the 12R will be priced around $51,000.
Adding to the exclusivity is that this car will only be available on the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM).
