China just made Mercedes' dream from 16 years ago a reality by driving a 5,700lb electric SUV across tunnel's ceiling with 360-degree loop

This Chinese company made Mercedes’ dream a reality by driving a 5,700Ib electric SUV across a tunnel’s ceiling.

Voyah’s Passion S defied gravity with this hair-raising stunt, mirroring what Mercedes had once aimed for back in 2010.

Back then, the SLS AMG drove up the walls of a tunnel with Michael Schumacher at the wheel, but it was widely believed to be CGI work.

Now, the Passion S completed that stunt in one continuous shot – and Voyah is pushing this as the real deal.

Chinese cars are on the rise, there’s no doubt about that

Chinese cars have been getting more and more attention these last few years.

In what feels like a relatively short length of time, the country’s profile as an automaker has risen dramatically.

Whether it’s replicating classic 1950s American cars or beating BMWs and Audis in suspension tests, these cars from the east are coming out on top in multiple forums.

And that’s nothing compared to the off-roading capabilities demonstrated by the BYD Yangwang U8.

It’s enough to make western carmakers feel a little apprehensive.

And this latest stunt from Voyah won’t do anything to dissuade those nerves.

What this electric SUV achieved is nothing short of remarkable by recreating a Mercedes stunt

At a test tunnel in Wuhan, the Voyah Passion S successfully completed a 360° tunnel loop challenge.

It looked like a stunt straight out of a Men In Black movie, but this was all too real.

According to Voyah, this stunt was pulled off by a standard market production version, making this the first production vehicle in the world to achieve such a manoeuvre.

The challenge was done in honor of the iconic tunnel ad which aired back in 2010, featuring Michael Schumacher and a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG.

As visually impressive as it was, publications at the time cast doubt over its authenticity.

At the time, Top Gear remarked: ‘It was straight out of Hollywood and most probably fake’.

Whether it was real or not, there’s no doubt that it was iconic and memorable – hence why a carmaker on the other side of the world is paying homage to it all these years later.
