This EV owner in Michigan was shocked when he realized how much more expensive it was to charge his EV at a Tesla Supercharger compared to filling a car with gas.

This YouTuber and EV owner confirmed what most people suspected.

EVs can be cheap, but not always, especially if you use a Supercharger.

But there’s an understandable reason behind this discrepancy.

As it turns out, using Superchargers was more expensive than gas

Historically, we’ve always known that there are cost differences between different countries and states.

Having said that, as long as you remain within the same area, putting gas in your car is more or less the same everywhere.

Gas can sometimes be cheaper in town and more expensive on highways in some countries but, other than that, there are no major discrepancies.

That’s not how charging your EV works.

As confirmed by YouTuber and EV owner ‘The Duke of Middleville‘, charging your car at home is a lot cheaper than using a Tesla Supercharger, which can be even more expensive than gas, at least in Michigan.

Charging his Rivian cost him a little over $21 for 43 kWh, adding 96 miles of range, but he pointed out that $21 would buy you (nearly) nine gallons of gas at $2.49/gallon, enough for 120-150 miles in a gas vehicle with 15 MPG.

The reason why charging at a Tesla Supercharger was so expensive

There are two reasons why charging at a Tesla Supercharger can be expensive.

First, fast Superchargers offer the best possible charging rate, which obviously comes at a premium.

Second, Tesla chargers are open to other vehicles that aren’t Tesla (Mercedes, Lucid, Honda, Rivian), but the charging rate is usually higher.

If you want to prioritize charging speed and convenience, Superchargers are probably the best option.

But if you want to maximize your savings, then home charging is the way to go.
