A new modular eVTOL flying car in China is capable of nearly 100mph, and it can fly passengers over nearly 200 miles.
This unusual-looking contraption was developed by the Ninth Academy of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation.
It is designed to ferry just two occupants over a distance of around 190 miles, and testing has recently begun at Yongchuan Da’an Airport in Chongqing Municipality.
The flying car, according to the developers, can operate both as a ground vehicle and as an airplane.

How the new Chinese modular eVTOL flying car works
The unusual-looking vehicle is made up of a split-type configuration.
There are three main components: the wings, a chassis, and the central cabin.
With the wings removed, you are left with a small, two-seater EV that will act like a conventional car.
Add on the wings, and you suddenly have a very unusual-looking flying car.
The modular construction allows for the removal of the wings, rather than them being stuck on permanently.
This allows the Chinese EV to get around on the ground much easier than some other flying cars.

According to People’s Daily, there is enough range in the land module for it to drive 186 miles.
The developers of the vehicle intend for it to be used in various roles.
These include transportation, logistics, and, in some emergency support roles, as well.

How fast can the eVTOL fly?
The developers of the aircraft say it can fly at up to 93mph, and has an altitude of up to 3,000 metres.
Recent test flights have proved successful, allowing it to complete initial performance verification tasks.
These tests include vertical takeoffs, stability in forward flight, and transitions from air to ground modes.
However, the eVTOL still needs to undergo further testing before it can be used commercially.
The biggest limitation, though, is that this can carry just two people in the air and on land.
There does not appear to be a lot of room in the cabin for occupants.
Plus, its range in the air and on the ground is less than 200 miles.
But it could prove popular for shorter journeys, and for various commercial work.
