If there was any doubt about electric SUVs going mainstream, the BMW iX3 has already erased it with staggering early demand.

In fact, the electric crossover is selling so well that it’s already outselling the combustion-engined X3 in BMW’s home market of Germany.

Unveiled in September at the IAA Mobility Show, the BMW iX3 has hit the ground running, speaking volumes about shifting buyer preferences.

And now, demand is so strong that much of Europe’s 2026 production is effectively spoken for.

The company recently hit a major electric milestone

According to BMW Italy President and CEO Massimiliano Di Silvestre, orders from European customers alone now cover nearly all planned production for next year.

This means that anyone that’s getting in line late may be waiting until 2027 for delivery.

Production initially takes place at BMW’s all-new Debrecen plant in Hungary, a cutting-edge factory designed specifically for Neue Klasse electric vehicles.

The new factory has a maximum annual capacity of around 150,000 units, boosting the German carmaker’s production capabilities significantly.

In fact, BMW recently hit a major milestone, having produced 3 million EVs since it began its electric journey in 2013.

While European deliveries will begin in spring 2026, US customers won’t see their cars until summer.

So what’s driving all this excitement?

Under the skin, the iX3 represents a major leap forward for BMW.

The launch model, the iX3 50 xDrive, uses a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup producing brisk performance and confident traction.

Power comes from a large 108.7-kWh battery, enabling an estimated WLTP range of up to 620 km (around 385 miles).

With a few driving tricks, the company even managed to squeeze out an astounding 626 miles of range on one charge, exceeding its estimated range by a significant margin.

This makes it one of the longest-range electric SUVs in its class.

The EV also has fast-charging capabilities, allowing the battery to gain hundreds of miles of range in roughly half an hour under ideal conditions.

The BMW iX3 is the flagship Neue Klasse vehicle

Inside, the iX3 debuts BMW’s next-generation digital experience.

A wide, curved display integrates the digital instrument cluster and central infotainment screen, powered by the brand’s latest operating system.

Sustainable materials, minimalist design, and a spacious cabin highlight the Neue Klasse philosophy.

Customers can also look forward to advanced driver-assistance systems, such as hands-free highway driving, automated parking, and enhanced collision avoidance tech.

European deliveries begin in spring 2026, while US customers won’t see their cars until summer.

Despite the iX3’s popularity, BMW isn’t ready to rest on its laurels.

Cheaper rear-wheel-drive ‘iX3 40’ variants with smaller batteries are due to arrive later in 2026, broadening the lineup and lowering the entry price.

With strong performance, long range, and unmistakable BMW polish, it’s no surprise the iX3 is selling out before it even properly arrives.
