If you want to get your hands on the Nissan Z sports car, including the Nismo version, that task might get harder soon, thanks to a change in production philosophy.
The new Nissan Z was first introduced in 2021, with production commencing in 2022 for the 2023 model year, and it has been critically acclaimed.
Nissan also launched the Z Nismo, a tuned and more responsive version of the car, offering extra performance compared to the standard model.
But despite the success of the new car, a production philosophy change might make the car quite rare from 2027 onwards.

What is changing with the Nissan Z sports car in 2027
Despite the changes, the Z sports car isn’t going anywhere.
The car has been a big hit with consumers and has become one of the most critically acclaimed sports cars of the last few years.
It takes its power from a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine, making 400hp and 350lb-ft of torque.
Nissan launched the track-focused Nismo version in July 2023, which boasted significant upgrades over the standard model.

For those looking to buy one for the 2027 model year, however, things are changing.
Reports have stated that the car will shift to a made-to-order production plan, effectively making each one a custom build.
The 2026 model was revealed at the Tokyo Auto Salon on January 9th, 2026, with an updated design.

The sports car is about to get very rare
Gone is the Nissan logo at the front, and in its place is a new Z badge.
The car also has a new front bumper design inspired by the Nissan S30.
A new 2027 Nismo version is also on the way and now has a manual transmission for the first time.
But the new production plan means fewer examples of the car will be made each year.
As such, the car will be a rare sight from now on.
“Nissan is taking a more tailored production approach with Z to better align with customer demand,” said a Nissan spokesperson.

The company is hoping to avoid building up too much inventory by taking on this new production approach.
In 2024, the company sold 3,164 units of the car, with 5,487 sold in 2025, although many were discounted 2024 models.
So while the sports car clearly isn’t going anywhere, expect to see fewer of them on dealership lots heading into 2027.
