Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason is one of the few confirmed owners of a Ferrari 250 GTO, which is still the most expensive Ferrari in the world.

It was actually the most expensive car, period, but that particular record was broken a few years ago.

Still, you need eight figures to buy one, and the first number won’t be a ‘1.’

And, incredibly, it cost Mason a relatively small sum.

The distinction between the 250 GTO and other 250s

Today, most people automatically associate the 250 name with the GTO, but it’s a bit more complicated than that.

The 250 GTO is one of the most expensive and rarest cars ever built.

It’s very difficult to find one you can buy, and if you do, it’ll cost eight figures.

For example, the most expensive Ferrari in the world – and most expensive car in the world before the record was broken – is a 250.

However, for years, Ferrari used the ‘250’ nameplate for so many different models because the name was simply based on the displacement of a single cylinder.

For example, TGE – a YouTuber that’s certainly wealthy but not that wealthy – owns a 250 GT.

The difference is one letter, but several zeros.

The 250 GTO costs eight figures, but the 250 GT (below) ‘only’ goes for about $500,000.

The Pink Floyd legend is one of the few confirmed owners of the most expensive Ferrari in the world

The Ferrari 250 GTO no longer holds the world record – it was beaten by a a Mercedes 300 SLR prototype sold for $142 million – but it still the most expensive Ferrari model ever.

The irony is that Mason – one of the few confirmed owners of the car (British radio presenter Chris Evans, amazingly, is another one) – actually paid ‘peanuts’ for his car.

Mason bought his 250 GTO second-hand in 1977, and he only paid £35,000 for it – equivalent to around $44,000, or $230,000+ in today’s money.

That’s certainly not a price everyone could afford.

But it still over a thousand times cheaper than the value of the car today.

Today, Nick Mason’s Ferrari is worth at least $50 million, which is enough to buy not one but two Citation private jets.
