The Porsche Macan Turbo EV performed better than expected in a recent long-range battery test.

Early this year, Porsche announced that the second generation of its popular Macan SUV would be exclusively available with an electric powertrain.

Porsche also announced a Turbo variant of the EV that offers an impressive 630 horsepower.

And with so much power, you may have assumed you’d sacrifice the range – but one recent road test showed that wasn’t the case.

The Macan EV is an impressive vehicle

The Porsche Macan Turbo EV would give most gas-powered SUVs a run for their money.

It can do 0-100km/h (0-62mph) in just 3.3 seconds and has a top speed limited to 260km/h (161mph).

The Macan Turbo has an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) range of 288 miles (463km) off a single charge.

But a recent test by Kyle from the Out Of Spec Reviews YouTube channel actually exceeded that.

And to make things even more impressive, Kyle traveled at a consistent speed of 112km/h (70mph), which uses more juice than mixed driving conditions.

The Macan was also tested using 22-inch wheels – rather than the more efficient 20-inch option that the EPA range is based on.

So, how did the Porsche Macan Turbo fare during the test?

In the clip, Kyle took the Porsche Macan Turbo onto the highway where he was able to keep at 112km/h.

He managed to squeeze 290 miles (466km) out of the Porsche before the battery was completely flat – bringing it in at two miles (3.2km) over the EPA-rated range.

Sure, it’s not a huge difference, but considering the speed and the optional larger wheels, it’s a decent outcome for the Porsche.

‘Range anxiety’ – the fear that an EV will run out of battery miles from a charging station – can be a real barrier preventing motorists from switching to electric vehicles.

In a bid to combat this, as well as increasing the number of charging stations, carmakers are working on increasing the range of their EV offerings.

Earlier this year, Mercedes showcased a concept electric car that traveled more than twice the distance of a typical electric car.

So range anxiety might soon be a thing of the past.
