Quiz: How much do you know about electric cars?

Did you know that the first Tesla was based on a cheap, rugged sports car from Europe?

And the company that made the device you’re reading this from has probably already made an EV.

Electric cars are here and they’re the future – or so we’re told.

But they’ve been around for much longer than we think.

It’s time to test your knowledge and find out how much you know about electric cars.

Nailed it! You probably know more about EVs than Elon Musk himself.

We won’t lie to you: we think you could do better.

Why don’t you go over the answers and take the quiz again?

#1. Which model did Mercedes use as a platform to create its first electric supercar?

Unveiled in 2011, the E-CELL prototype was based on the SLS AMG Coupé.

It had four electric motors, providing a power output of 526 hp.

Mercedes had plans to mass-produce it but it never happened: only nine units were built.

#2. What is the name of Lucid Motors' first car?

The expression ‘Tesla Killer’ has been used so many times.

But when it comes to the Lucid Air, Tesla legitimately has competition.

Partly because it looks great and also because it has a range of 520 miles.

#3. Which of these will be the world's most powerful electric supercar?

The Rimac Nevera and the Pininfarina Battista use a very similar powertrain (developed by Rimac), and they both put out around 1,900 hp.

The Evija, Lotus’ first-ever EV, is slightly more powerful than that at 1,970 hp.

However, the Deus Vayanne takes the crown with a whopping 2,200 hp.

#4. Which of these statements about the Porsche Taycan is FALSE?

‘Taycan’ is a frankenword combining two Turkish words: TAY and CAN.

Tay means foal, a young horse, and Can means life, so basically Taycan roughly translates to ‘young horse full of life’.

#5. Who did BMW team up with to create the 'soundtrack' for its EVs?

BMW teamed up with Oscar-winning score composer Hans Zimmer (Gladiator, Inception, The Lion King) to develop a sound that mimics the exhaust notes.

The IconicSounds Electric, this is what BMW calls it, was first introduced with the i4.

#6. Only one of these tech companies has NOT made a car yet: which is it?

Sony and Huawei have both unveiled an EV under their own name.

Google is making autonomous EVs using one of its subsidiaries, Waymo.

However, Apple hasn’t made a car yet.

Mind you, that’s going to change soon because Apple is currently working on its first car.

#7. Where is Rimac Automobili based?

Rimac Automobili was founded in a small town near Zagreb, the capital of Croatia.

The company is still based there.

Earlier this year, Rimac finalized the acquisition of Bugatti, which is technically now known as ‘Bugatti Rimac’.

#8. What sports car was used as a base for the first Tesla Roadster?

Introduced in 2008, the Roadster was Tesla’s first vehicle. It has very little in common with modern Tesla cars you can buy in 2022.

This is because it was basically a heavily re-engineered Lotus Elise.
