Massachusetts-based Spike Aerospace is working on the S-512 Diplomat supersonic business jet, which can travel from New York to Paris in four hours.

The supersonic jet, aims to blend luxury travel with super-fast travel speeds.

The company says it’s ‘excited to reintroduce supersonic flight’ and promises to cut flight times by around half.

This week, Spike teased that the S-512 Diplomat supersonic business jet was in a new design phase and that ‘quiet supersonic travel [was] closer than ever’.

The S-512 Diplomat supersonic jet to cut flight times in half

Since the beloved Concorde bowed out back in 2003, there haven’t been any commercial supersonic flights.

However, there are several big names working to change that, including Boom Sonic, which is building the Overture airliner, and NASA, which has the X-59 as part of its Quiet Supersonic Technology (QueSST) mission

Massachusetts-based Spike Aerospace is also working on its own supersonic commercial aircraft.

The S-512 Diplomat business jet offers the sort of high-end luxury you’d expect to find from a private plane, but will also be capable of cutting travel times in half.

According to Spike, the S-512 Diplomat business jet will be able to travel from New York to London in just 3.3 hours, compared to 6.2 hours on a standard flight; fly from Singapore to Sydney in 3.7 hours, instead of seven; and cut the travel time from London to Dubai from 6.1 hours to just 3.2 hours.

Earlier this week, the company announced ‘significant progress in the development’ of the S-512 Diplomat business jet.

The release went on to say that the plane was in a new design phase and that the company was ‘completing an enhanced study to further refine the S-512 Diplomat’s aerodynamics, cabin configuration, and low-boom performance’.

“Our goal is to redefine long-distance travel for business and government leaders, offering the speed of supersonic with the comfort and discretion of a private jet,” Spike Aerospace President and CEO Vik Kachoria said.

“The S-512 Diplomat is being engineered to connect cities like New York and Paris in under four hours — quietly and sustainably.”

How close are we to supersonic commercial flights?

There’s currently a lot of time and money being invested into getting supersonic commercial flights back up and running.

Part of the reason supersonic flights were shelved after Concorde was due to the incredibly loud sonic boom that’s created when a plane passes through the speed of sound.

However, newer technologies, like the one NASA is working on, are helping to make the sonic boom a thing of the past, and potentially usher in a new era of super-fast travel.
