Subaru has just set up the world’s most remote EV charging point on the island of St Helena, which is approximately 1,200 miles off the southwest coast of Africa.

As the automaker pointed out, it’s now home to both a 192-year-old tortoise and the latest Subaru Solterra EV.

While it’s also not the only island with an EV charging station, it is the most remote one with a public station.

Subaru puts an EV charging point on a remote island

Subaru UK partnered with Easee, a Norwegian EV charger brand, to set up the world’s most remote public EV charging point in St Helena.

For those interested in trivia, it’s the same place where Napolean was exiled.

The isolated island is a part of the British Overseas Territory and is mainly inhabited.

Speaking of, there’s another island in the English Channel where cars are totally banned.

Despite its low population, St Helena is home to decent roads and off-road terrain.

That’s likely why Subaru UK sent a Solterra EV as part of its tests, where the EV further explored all of St Helena’s roads.

The island currently has four more electric vehicles that can benefit from the newly installed EV charging point.

St Helena will get more EVs in the future

Its authorities also want the entire place to switch to sustainable power and zero-emissions transport by 2030.

That further translates to more EVs in town, all of which will have a public charging station.

“There are a lot of diesel and petrol vehicles primarily and we want to change that behavior and start to use more electric vehicles,” St Helena Minister Mark Brooks said.

The remote EV charging point in question sits beside the island’s Museum in the capital, Jamestown.

“From Subaru’s perspective, it’s an honor to be involved in a project that could potentially lead to a fully sustainable future for Saint Helena,” Subaru UK’s Managing Director, Lorraine Bishton, said.

In addition, it’s not the only island with an EV charging point.

A billionaire has their own Tesla Supercharger on a private island too.

But it’s not a public charger, and certainly not the most isolated place in the world, either.
