It had barely been on the highway in years, but that didn’t stop this vintage Greyhound bus from taking on a 2,000-mile road trip across three states.
Affectionately named Lenny, the 77-year-old coach belongs to a Tennessee-based bus restorer who regularly brings classic buses back to life.
But Lenny wasn’t just a project vehicle – he had a job to do.
The mission? Drive nearly 1,000 miles from Tennessee to help a friend whose own vintage Eagle coach had broken down in Texas. Unfortunately, it wasn’t all smooth sailing.

How a vintage Greyhound pulled off a modern marathon
Lenny is a 1947 Greyhound Silverside that had only done one real trip since restoration began.
The interior wasn’t fully finished, but with working air conditioning and a bathroom, he was ‘road trip-ready enough.’
So they hit the highway on a nearly 2,000-mile round trip through brutal summer heat in the mid-90s.
Every bathroom or snack stop doubled as a repair check-in or a last-minute supply run. Lenny’s health, after all, came first.

And it wasn’t all smooth cruising.
A nasty pothole damaged one of the tires. The fuel filters clogged repeatedly with gunk from five-year-old diesel. Temperatures ran high, and the air filters were choking on grime.
But every time something went wrong, they fixed it roadside and kept rolling.
To everyone’s surprise, Lenny held his own.
Smooth, steady, and ‘shockingly’ comfortable at 68mph, the old Greyhound Silverside proved he still belonged in the fast lane.

It might be old, but Lenny’s just getting started
After days on the road, they arrived in Texas and the crew turned their attention to the stranded Eagle.
They replaced its faulty wheel seal, tightened the shifted airbag mount, and inspected the belts and engine mounts for stress and misalignment.

They then gave Lenny some much-deserved TLC – washing out the oil bath filters with gasoline and letting them dry in the sun before the return leg.
Sure, the old coach arrived home with a few drips and a tired tire. But for a vehicle that spent years sitting still, he didn’t just survive the journey – he proved immortal.

If there’s one thing we love, it’s an old Greyhound survival story – like the rare double-decker that’s one of the last of its kind.
And now, Lenny’s owner says this trip has reignited plans for more adventures.
Turns out, 77 years is nothing when you’re built to last.
