The Tesla Cybertruck range extender has been a highly anticipated feature that was said to be coming mid-2025 – but it seems to be MIA.

In initial marketing, Tesla said that the range extender was meant to be a battery ‘backpack’ built into the Cybertruck bed and would have boosted the EV’s range to nearly 500 miles.

The maker never gave buyers a timeline for the range extender, but just after the first EV launched, the range extender was available for reservation for $2,000.

Eagle-eyed Tesla fans have seen on the website that the twice-delayed configuration option for Cybertrucks has completely disappeared from the website, suspicious.

What did Tesla promise with the Cybertruck range extender?

Fans of the controversial Tesla Cybertruck were, in some cases, holding out for the official rollout of the EV automaker’s promised Cybertruck range extender.

Back then, the extender was described as a trunk-mounted ‘backpack’. And, at the launch of the first Cybertruck, it promised to extend its already impressive range of 325 miles on a dual motor to ‘more than 470 miles.’

The triple-motor Tesla Cyberbeast would also be enhanced by the range extender, increasing the range to a strong 440 miles.

These were part of the promises that came with the rollout of the initial EV. But the automaker decided to keep extending – ironically – the launch date of the highly anticipated feature.

It has since been twice extended with seemingly no end in sight.

The feature has been declared missing in action

The company discreetly edited the feature on its website’s configuration tool in autumn 2024.

At which point it became clear that the 470-mile range was a bit of an ‘overpromise/ underdeliver’ situation for Tesla.

The 470+ mile range was reduced to 445+ with the plus doing a lot of heavy lifting. The Cyberbeast’s range, however, plummeted to only 415+.

The automaker also made it clear that the extended range would be available at some point this year. But as of recently, the option has completely disappeared from the website.

We want to believe that the automaker is just reconfiguring the charging range for its mid-2025 launch. And that it hasn’t quietly become defunct while Tesla hopes we’ve all forgotten about it.
