US couple who bought two Tesla cars and drove 500 miles a week in them left stunned after checking their electricity bills

An American couple who bought two Tesla cars and racked up 500 miles in a week were left floored when they saw their electricity bills.

The couple, who live in Florida, easily rack up hundreds of miles on their Tesla Model Y Performance and Tesla Model 3 Long Range.

As such, they expected their electricity bill to be immense.

But when they saw the total, they were left stunned.

Two Tesla cars and 500 miles – breaking down the costs

YouTuber Mac’s Tech Toy Box was an big fan of Tesla, as he and his wife demonstrated.

While he estimated he drove between 500 to 550 miles a week, his wife was closer to 500.

That’s some considerable mileage for a car – higher than the estimated US average of 260 a week.

While Mac charged his EV around five to six times a week, his wife was charging around three to four.

They weren’t doing the full charge, but rather charging to between 70 and 90 percent.

Their aim was to keep it comfortably topped up, in order to avoid paying at public chargers.

If you know anything about EVs, you’ll know that public chargers hit your bank balance a lot harder than charging at home – but still cheaper than gas, admittedly.

Before they’d made the switch to Tesla, their household electricity bill came to around $225 a month.

That’s higher than the Floridian average of $168, but obviously a lot of factors come into fluctuations – air conditioning use for one.

So how much had it gone up since bringing EVs into the household?

How different is the bill now they have two EVs?

Contrary to what you might think, the electricity bill actually went down.

After he bought the Model Y and charged it through the cooler months, he said their bill actually dipped to about $214.80 on average.

However, the real test would come when both Teslas were charging at home during the summer.

It was here that their bills jumped up to $267.32.

While that is much higher than what it was with just the one car, it was only slightly higher than how things were before they got the Teslas.

Comparing the costs to gas prices

Here’s the ultimate question – was this still cheaper than driving gas cars?

That was a resounding yes.

Mac estimated that the couple were spending around $320 a month on gas.

So all in all, they were still saving money.

Because let’s face it, if you’re going to make a big lifestyle shift, you’ll want to do it more if you know you’re saving some bucks.
