This Tesla Model 3 took on a Ford Mustang Dark Horse in a race, and it was incredibly close despite the $30,000 gulf between the cars.
The car-shopping experts at Edmunds Cars put the two cars up against each other in an episode of their U-Drag Race series.
The Model 3 costs less than $60,000, whilst the Dark Horse with a supercharger is somewhere around the $90,000 mark.
Given the difference in price and horsepower, this should be a slam dunk – but that’s not quite what happened out on the track.

This Tesla Model 3 and Ford Mustang Dark Horse went head-to-head
On paper, this should be an open-and-shut case.
Leaving aside the price factor – because after all, money isn’t everything – the Dark Horse does have other things on its side.
A supercharged Mustang is capable of 810hp and 615 lb-ft of torque, outshining the Model 3’s 510hp and 554lb-ft.

You’d be forgiven for expecting this to be a one-horse race.
However, anyone who has watched enough drag races knows to expect the unexpected.
After all, plenty of factors can influence the outcome of a race, not least the timing and skills of the drivers behind the wheel.
So what happened when these two titans faced off in Edmunds Cars’ test?

Despite the fact that it has a hefty battery in its floor, the Model 3 proved to be lighter, and that made a whole world of difference.
This race saw the two cars on a quarter-mile sprint, braking hard, doing a U-turn, and accelerating back to where they started.
So evidently, there was a fair bit of skill involved, not just a simple case of hitting the gas and hoping for the best.
Which car came out on top in the end?
Whilst the cars switched lanes and drivers kept things fair and balanced, it was all for naught as both tests proved the same point – the Model 3 had the victory.
To be fair to the Mustang, it was close.
But both times around, the Tesla claimed victory.

Talk about a nailbiter.
We love seeing races where it’s a close-run thing.
After all, is it quite as exciting to see one car getting left in the dust? Depends on who you ask, we suppose.
It was certainly a landslide victory when this Ferrari SP3 and Pagani Huayra raced each other.
Ditto for this Cybertruck’s showdown with a Hummer EV.
We’ve seen a lot of them this year alone, with results that left us gripping our phones in anticipation.
