This Tesla Model 3 owner compared charging costs to fuel costs after a year of ownership, and the difference is staggering.

YouTuber EV Kiwis said charging costs had been the first thing people had asked him about his Tesla.

That’s inevitable, given how much charging costs and fuel costs are compared to each other in the EV vs Gas debate.

In this case, there was a huge difference.

How much had charging costs set back this Tesla Model 3 owner?

In the year since he’d purchased his Tesla Model 3, EV Kiwis had racked up 8,313 miles.

That’s a solid amount, although it pales in comparison to this Model 3, which had 223,000 miles on the clock.

But at any rate, thousands of miles still equals plenty of charging.

So how much had he spent in his first year of EV ownership?

Well, most of his charging had been done at home, with occasional forays into public charging stations.

Charging at home saved him a lot, as he was usually charging at night – using off-peak rates.

Home charging made up 56 percent of total charging, and 93 percent of home charging was done during off-peak hours.

We can hear the savings pouring in, can’t you?

In total, home charging cost him $170 ($268 in New Zealand dollars).

That’s around $14.25 ($22.37 NZD) extra onto the electricity bill every month.

“I honestly still can’t get my head around how unreal that sounds as we were paying about $41 ($65 NZD) for fuel before this,” the YouTuber said.

The Model 3 came with 932 miles of free charging at the Superchargers, which was used up in the first year.

For other public chargers, he ended up being charged $114.58 ($179.89 NZD) over the year.

In total, he spent around $285.54 ($448.29 NZD) on charging.

Now comes the moment of truth – how much would gas have cost?

Were fuel costs really that much higher by comparison?

At the time the video was made, gas cost around 2.77 cents per liter in New Zealand.

Over in the US, it’d be $6.67 per gallon.

If he’d driven the equivalent miles in a gas car, it would have cost him $2,165 ($3,416 NZD).

We’re talking about savings of $1,880 ($2,968 NZD).

We know a penny saved is a penny earned, but this takes it to the next level.

This isn’t the first time a Tesla owner has gone public about their savings, and it certainly won’t be the last.

Another Model 3 owner broke down the figures and threw in insurance and maintenance for good measure.

In fact, Tesla owners en masse are sharing their savings, and it’s enough to make you convert to an EV on the spot.

Even among EV owners, there’s some competition, though, as this GMC Hummer EV owner discovered when he compared his charging costs to his neighbor’s Tesla.
