GMC Hummer EV owner bewildered by charging costs after 311 miles compared to neighbor's Tesla

A GMC Hummer EV owner can’t figure out why their EV costs so much more than a Tesla.

The charging cost after 311 miles was eyebrow-raisingly higher.

The owner didn’t reveal their identity or where they live, but the internet still came up with a few theories as to why the Hummer is so much more expensive.

And some of them made a lot of sense.

The difference isn’t pocket change

A member of GMC Hummer EV Facebook Group posted a screenshot of how much they spent after 311 miles, and how much their neighbor spent, and it’s not even close.

That’s $108 compared to the Tesla, which costs the owner $84 for the same exact amount of miles.

“Please help me understand why charging is costing me so much compared to a Tesla. We live in the same neighborhood, if that matters,” the owner said in the anonymous post.

That’s a good question, but people in the comments provided a long list of equally good answers.

Why the GMC Hummer EV has heftier costs

The first problem is weight.

The GMC Hummer EV didn’t reveal what type of Tesla their neighbor drives, but statistically, that’s probably either a Model 3 or a Model Y.

But even in the unlikely chance it’s a Cybertruck, the Hummer EV is still heavier.

Cybertruck weighs 6,863lbs (3,100kg) compared to the Hummer EV’s base model, which weighs over 9,000lbs (over 4,000kg).

The extra weight reduces the range, especially when we remember that the Hummer EV is very powerful (1,000hp) and has features like the crab walk, which also consume extra energy.

The second problem is the battery pack.

The GMC truck is fitted with a massive battery pack, and larger battery packs cost more to charge because they need more energy.

One of the commenters hit the nail right on the head.

“Hummers usually give you 1.5 miles per kWh, Teslas or comparable smaller cars give you about three miles per kWh.

“So, unfortunately, same as a V8 truck is gonna give you 15 miles a gallon, and the Camry is gonna give you closer to 30,” the comment read.
