A Tesla Model S owner who drove it for over 1,600,000 miles has revealed what made it possible.

It’s fair to say that Hansjörg von Gemmingen-Hornberg has put his 2014 Model S P85 to good use.

It even earned him a shoutout from Elon Musk in 2019.

But what is the secret to a long lasting Tesla?

This Tesla Model S has racked more than 1.6 million miles

This Tesla has been through a lot of change over its 1.6 million miles – the engine was replaced 13 times, to be exact.

Usually, 13 would be considered an unlucky number, but it doesn’t seem to have done this car any harm.

Gemmingen-Hornberg  has got form when it comes to getting the most out of his cars, as he previously racked up 400,000 miles on his Tesla Roadster.

But when he traded it in for a Model S, he got one that had 18,641 miles on the clock.

He wasted no time in adding miles on, going through four batteries in the meantime.

This is the equivalent of a new battery pack every 300,000 miles.

What is the secret to longevity with a car like this?

He’s had the Tesla Model S for over 10 years at this point, and it’s still going strong.

What is his secret?

Like many things in life, it all comes down to taking breaks.

Gemmingen-Hornberg said that he doesn’t drive for more than 62 miles at a time before he takes a break.

This benefits him as a driver, but it also does his car a world of good.

He also recharges the car when the battery reaches 20 percent rather than leaving it until the last minute when it’s nearly at zero.

And how has he managed to accumulate so many miles, you may be wondering?

Well, he’s retired now and is taking a lot of road trips, whether it be in Sweden or China or Morocco.

That sounds like the best way to rack up miles in our book.

But even with 1.6 million miles on the clock, he’s still got a way to go before catching up to the big hitters in the high mileage game.

One Greek taxi driver racked up an astonishing 3 million miles over the course of 23 years, whilst a Canadian cabbie hit 1.6 million over 35 years.

Still, there’s time yet to catch up to them.

Maybe driving from Sweden to China, and then heading back via Morocco ought to do the trick?
