In an amalgamation of its owner’s two pride and joys, Tesla cars are expected to be fitted with WiFi modules from Starlink, as per a patent that was authorized last week.
Tesla is already one of the most advanced EV brands on the planet.
But to stay ahead of its stiff and ever-increasing competition, the brand is now taking a helping hand from places outside of the planet.
Namely, Starlink, as the orbiting satellite systems are set to boost Tesla cars into a 5G future.

Tesla is making drastic changes to its cars’ roofs… again
Over the years, Tesla has made quite a statement with its technology, but most of its specialties lie in the software and in the roof.
The brand popularised the solar-powered roof, which has helped keep charging costs down to a minimum.
Some people have taken it into their own hands to give it a boost, but for the most part, the 360-degree opaque solar panel has been a huge success.
Although that has changed in recent weeks, as the new Standard Model has seen the EV makers dial back the expenses in the glass sunroof department, to ensure sale prices can drop.
However, the company is actively working on replacing the glass roof with a new material.

Thanks to a new patent (Pub. No U.S. 2025/0368267), originally filed in 2024 and publicized this week, the company is developing a new polymer-blend design, made up from ‘polycarbonate, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, or acrylonitrile atyrene acrylate’.
Basically, it will be a new high-tech synthetic material designed to integrate ‘radio frequency transmission’ and establish ‘reception’ from satellites.
So, isn’t it a coincidence that Starlink is the perfect partner?
From space, with love – new patent reveals Starlink will soon support Tesla’s EVs
Startlink has begun to roll out on a number of ‘vehicles’, offering WiFi connection to its riders.
So far, it has been limited to airplanes, as Emirates signed a colossal deal to have all of its 232 planes fitted with Starlink, starting with the Boeing 777 fleet.
Now, the Tesla patent could see the EVs be fitted with modules in the roof that will allow transmissions to Starlink.
Not only will this provide free connection, but it will also allow its cars to avoid GPS dead zones as the 10,000 satellites create a complete blanket over Earth, which is a major win for the autonomous vehicles.

There’s no news yet on when the cars could be fitted with the Starlink-compliant roofs, but with pressure on Tesla to up its game, you can expect this patent to be a catalyst for an increased development cycle.
