The first-gen Tesla Roadster that Elon Musk sent into space with Starman at the wheel is currently traveling at around 11,000mph.

Ironically, the Roadster is still under warranty.

This is because the car is technically flying, not driving.

Also, for the same reason, the vehicle is currently achieving an incredible fuel economy of ‘0.0 miles per gallon’.

The story behind Tesla Roadster and Starman

On 6 February 2018, a Tesla Roadster with Starman, a mannequin dressed as an astronaut, at the wheel was sent into orbit aboard the Falcon Heavy rocket.

In the seven years since his mission began, Starman has traveled an incredibly long way.

The Roadster has covered an incredible amount of miles so far and it is currently heading in the direction of Mars, although people say it is expected to pivot back and travel relatively close to Earth in 2047.

At one point, it was theorized that Starman was coming back to Earth, but that seems unlikely.

The good news is the chances of Roadster actually hitting Earth on its way back are close to zero.

Here’s how you can keep track

There’s a website called ‘Where is Roadster?‘ that anybody can use to keep track of the car in real time, and the website is updated daily.

The vehicle has traveled far enough to drive all of the world’s roads 88.2 times, and it has been in space for seven years and two months.

Here’s another interesting fact: Starman has completed about 4.7 orbits around the Sun since launch.

What’s going on with the second-gen Roadster?

The first-gen Roadster was launched nearly 20 years ago but its successor isn’t here yet.

Tesla first teased the second generation of Roadster in 2017 but, as per usual, the company decided to postpone production more than once.

This is partly due to the fact that Tesla is busy redirecting resources to develop its self-driving technology, something Elon Musk himself is heavily banking on.

In 2024, Musk said Tesla would launch Roadster 2.0 but we wouldn’t hold our breath.
