Recent filings with the California Air Resources Board have shed some light on the Tesla Semi’s battery – it weighs more than an entire Cybertruck.
When you think of lightweight vehicles, the Cybertruck is the last thing that would come to mind.
Yet and still, the battery of a Tesla Semi outweighs it.
How can that possibly be?
How big is a Tesla Semi’s battery exactly, and how does it compare to a Cybertruck?
Documentation filed with the California Air Resources Board puts the battery capacities at 548kWh and 822kWh.
There are two battery size options depending on the model chosen by the customer – the 548kWh is for the Standard Range, while 822kWh is for the Long Range.

For the sake of comparison, a Cybertruck’s battery is 123kWh.
Based on the 1,590-pound weight of the Cybertruck’s battery, this puts the Semi’s at between 7,000 and 10,500 pounds.
And the weight of an entire Cybertruck? Less than 7,000 pounds.
That is a pretty remarkable fact to wrap your head around – one truck’s battery outweighs another’s entire vehicle.
When can we expect to see the Tesla Semi?
It’s no secret that people have been waiting a while for the Semi to arrive – some guys got so sick of waiting that they started up their own electric truck company in the meantime.
But there are plenty of things worth waiting for, right?
Mass production of the Semi has officially begun, as of April 29.
Besides test deliveries made back in late 2022, this truck hasn’t seen much action on the road.

Well, except for appearing on Jay Leno’s Garage, that is.
The chat show legend actually drove a pre-production version of the truck in 2023, before revisiting a production spec model earlier this year.
But if this footage of a Semi-truck powering past diesel trucks on a highway is anything to go by, then there’s plenty of cause to get excited.
