This YouTuber made a Looney Tunes-style painted brick wall to see if his Tesla’s autopilot would detect it whilst driving at speed.
YouTuber Mark Rober wanted to see if his Tesla Model Y would be more of a Wile E. Coyote or a Road Runner.
With an extremely realistic image of the road ahead projected onto the wall, it was anyone’s guess what would happen.
The only thing that was for certain was that there wouldn’t be any cartoon sound effects if it went through.

Would Tesla’s autopilot rise to the task against a Looney Tunes-style painted brick wall?
Tesla’s EVs don’t come with LiDar sensors, which is somewhat controversial.
Experts have claimed that a reliance on cameras make their vehicles less safe than its competitors.
YouTuber Mark Rober wanted to do a direct comparison, so he put his Model Y up against a Lexus RX, which was equipped with LiDar.

The tests involved dummies placed on the road, but that wasn’t the real attraction here.
Oh no, it was the Looney Tunes-style brick wall that had a road plastered over the side of it.
You may recall the various escapades of Wile E. Coyote from your Saturday mornings as a kid.
That animated coyote was desperate to get his hands on the speedy Road Runner and went to lengths to seize his prey – a popular method included painting convincing backdrops onto brick walls.
But the bird always found a way to outsmart him, and would dart off after its characteristic beep.
This time around, there was no birds and no coyotes – just a Tesla Model Y on autopilot and a wall with a sheet draped over it.

We have to admit, it looked pretty convincing.
The Lexus SUV pulled up approaching the wall, proving that the LiDar sensors had done their job.
How did the Tesla fare by comparison?
That’s all Folks! The results are in!
Well, it didn’t do great at all – it ploughed straight through that wall.
“Turns out my Tesla is less Road Runner, and more Wile E. Coyote!” Rober commented, as he exited the vehicle.

To be fair, how many times in life are cars faced with walls that have realistic looking images of roads placed on them?
All the same, it’s probably not the most encouraging news for people who are fans of using autopilot whilst in their Teslas.
Then there’s Full Self-Driving mode, which is essentially a different version of the software.
But even that isn’t free from controversy.
In fact, it’s at the root of a dispute between Tesla and California’s DMV, with the state institution pushing for the sale of Tesla vehicles to be banned.
Despite this, there’s no signs that the manufacturer will ease up on the technology.
An FSD Robotaxi service being launched in several American cities, and Elon Musk is declaring that unsupervised FSD is on the way.
Even a retired 82-year-old bus driver gave it his endorsement.
