This 1.7-mile-long electric train charges itself and supposedly climbs back uphill without plugging in.
The locomotive is called the ‘Infinity Train’ and it has a hefty purchase price of $221 million.
But the train is also a step towards a cleaner world.
And, it could pave the way for others in the industry to follow.

Now, we’re all used to being surrounded by electric cars, and some planes have even joined in on the action, too.
But, EV technology has been around on the railways for over a century. And now one company has created a rather special electric train.
And, in a world-first development, the Infinity Train has come to life.
It will ‘utilize the gravitational energy generated on the downhill loaded sections of Fortescue’s rail network to recharge its battery electric systems,’ explained manufacturer Fortescue Zero.

All of which is a fancy way of saying that its battery charges itself, removing the need for diesel. So charging up on the journey downhill means it can travel back uphill on a full battery. But the good news doesn’t stop there.
The train also helps towards its goal of being ‘diesel-free by 2030’, while also providing reduced maintenance costs.
The Infinity Train is said to be transforming the company’s rail operations.
It’s replacing diesel-powered locomotives with a greener alternative that can charge itself using ‘regenerative energy’ while not producing harmful emissions.
Fortescue recently announced the news of the train’s delivery online, and the CEO, Ellie Coates, said that she was ‘thrilled’ to see the prototype arrive in Australia as it was a major step in the ‘journey to Real Zero’.

The train will now undergo rigorous testing before being put to service mining in the Australian Pilbara region.
EV technology is taking over
The act of replacing gas-powered vehicles and modes of transport with electric is becoming increasingly popular.
For example, there was recently a very historic moment that went down at JFK Airport with the first ever all-electric aircraft landing.
Plus, Tesla’s all-electric ‘Giga Train’ launched in Germany in recent months, too.
So, the future of transport could be all-electric, and zero emissions could become our reality.
For now, though, check out the Infinity train here.
Innovation in motion. Our prototype battery electric locomotive has arrived in the Pilbara, purpose-built by Fortescue Zero to help drive Real Zero.⚡️
