The Mammoth Overland SKL from Washington is no ordinary rooftop tent.
It’s a tough, all-aluminum camper built like an airplane and bolted to the roof of your truck.
Designed in Washington, it comes from the same minds behind Vashon Aircraft.
Yes, real plane builders.

Unlike soft-sided tents, the SKL is made with riveted panels, just like the ones you’d see on a small aircraft.
The walls fold out like origami. When closed, it looks like a sleek jet pod. When opened, it’s a fully insulated shelter for two.

Inside, it’s surprisingly cozy. You get R5 insulation, better than most rooftop tents.
It also has built-in LED lighting, a roof fan, and both interior and exterior trail lights.
Power comes from two Renogy Rego solid-state lithium batteries, offering 208Ah of off-grid energy.
The batteries may seem like overkill, but this man who lived off-grid on his solar-powered sailboat will tell you that having a ready energy supply is vital.
The SKL isn’t just for sleep either.
It’s wired for solar panels and has a 500-pound capacity roof rack on top.
That means you can haul extra gear without needing another trailer, which is great news considering your fuel economy with a trailer might not be the best.
It’s also compact, at 89 inches long and 59 inches wide outside, with a surprisingly comfortably-sized bed inside.

Mammoth Overland hasn’t shared the final weight or price yet.
But similar campers made of aluminum tend to land around the $9,000 to $10,000 mark.
With batteries, insulation, and other upgrades, this one might be a bit more.
However, you might still be able save on rent by staying in one of these, at least temporarily, like this Californian engineer who moved into his camper van.
The company already made headlines with its ELE trailer, which had bear spray cannons and a Geiger counter.
The Mammoth Overland SKL is calmer, but it keeps the same overbuilt energy.

Instead of soft walls or mesh windows, it’s all metal, rugged, and ready for extreme conditions.
And even though it’s just a concept now, the company says a full production version is coming later this year.
