A forgotten collection of classic cars in Sacramento was just days away from being crushed in a junkyard until a last-minute rescue mission changed everything.
Among the survivors: a Chevy C10, a groovy 1970s van, and an Oldsmobile Cutlass.
But who were the unlikely heroes behind this?
A former Roadkill host and his friend Mason, drawn in by an email offering a ‘deal you cannot refuse.’

Former Roadkill host David Freiburger shared his experience in a recent video on YouTube.
It all started with a message from a long-time viewer who had fallen in love with old, beat-up cars thanks to Roadkill, a show known for celebrating rough-but-running machines.
That viewer had somehow ended up involved with a local junkyard.
Whether he was working there, volunteering, or just hanging around, one thing was clear: he couldn’t bear to watch old vehicles meet their end.
So he started buying them at scrap value and quietly filled a warehouse with forgotten metal from the past.
But with retirement looming and no plans to keep the cars, he reached out for help.

He told Freiburger that he has eight cars in his warehouse, and offered him ‘a deal you cannot refuse.’
For someone whose life revolves around saving derelict vehicles, that was more than enough motivation, so Freiburger was off to Sacramento.
The YouTuber had a few clear targets going into the rescue mission.
The first vehicle he picked up was a 1966 Oldsmobile Cutlass, a fading beauty from the muscle car era.
The Cutlass has a pretty interesting story behind how it ended up at the junkyard.

It originally belonged to a pastor, before it was stolen and ended up in the hands of a homeless man, who lived it for a time.
When it broke down, it was abandoned on the freeway, before it was impounded and even declared a biohazard, reminding us of this strange BMW with a gross surprise inside.
Judging from the interior, one can clearly tell that it has seen better days, although it didn’t stop Freiburger from picking it up.
He then picked up a 1969 Chevy C10, which is in pretty good shape for its age.

While there were some problems popping open the hood to take a look at the engine, when he eventually opened it, the engine was also in good condition.
The interior of the Chevy C10 was described as ‘mint’ by the YouTuber, barring several age-related defects.
The last vehicle he rescued was a Chevy van from 1974, which he’s especially pumped about because he hasn’t owned a van before.

Unfortunately, while the exterior looks acceptable, the interior could use a deep-cleaning for sure.
While he later recalled that he has indeed owned a van before (a Dodge shortbed panel van), he picked this van up anyway.
The rescue mission was a success.
Thanks to one fan’s soft spot for old cars and another’s inability to resist a good deal, these three classics dodged the jaws of the crusher.

Instead of becoming scrap, they’re now on their way for a better future.
Not every car has a happy ending, as this junkyard full of Mercedes-Benz can attest to, but these rescued cars may have more chapters left in their stories.
