A new type of UK speed camera has already amassed an incredible sum of money in the country, with over $3 million worth of fines coming from just a single spot.
The new cameras have been dubbed ‘speed on green’ devices, and they’re rapidly becoming the most lucrative type of camera in the UK.
Rather than just people who run red lights, they also track how fast people are going through green lights to see if they are breaking the speed limit.
One camera in particular has become a real top earner, with nearly 100 tickets on average daily and over $3 million worth of fines.

How the new UK speed camera works
There are speed cameras in the UK that, of course, simply record someone speeding in a certain zone.
The UK also has cameras that record cars that jump a red light while also exceeding the speed limit.
But these new ‘speed on green’ cameras record those who speed through a green light.
The first of these was trialed in 2019.
For example, if a car goes through a green light in a 30mph zone at 40mph, they will get a ticket.

The cameras work by monitoring multiple lanes at the same time.
They do this with HD imaging, plus precise speed detection.
Even minor applications of the throttle could result in a ticket.
One camera has amassed a fortune in fines
A camera in Sutton-in-Ashfield on the A38 Kings Mill Road West junction has been particularly busy.
It has racked up fines from 24,311 motorists over the last year.
That is an average of nearly 70 speeding tickets daily.
In total, it has racked up £2.4 million worth of fines in this one spot, the equivalent of $3.1 million.
Many drivers are unaware that these cameras are watching for such speed violations.

Motorists in the UK have, perhaps unsurprisingly, expressed frustration at the new cameras.
While unpopular with drivers, safety groups are happy that they appear to be discouraging risky acceleration.
The last thing anyone wants is a major accident at an intersection.
It is certainly a warning sign for those thinking of being sneaky to play it safe and avoid a fine or a collision.
