Passengers heading to China got an unexpected detour after a United pilot forgot his passport during the long journey across the Pacific.
The routine international trip quickly turned into a mid-air reversal that left hundreds of travelers wondering what had gone wrong.
The unusual incident happened on March 22, 2025, aboard a United Airlines flight traveling from Los Angeles International Airport to Shanghai Pudong International Airport.
Thanks to one simple mistake, the entire aircraft had to turn around and land in California.
The passengers were delayed for six hours after the pilot forgot his passport
The flight in question, United Flight UA198, was operated by a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner carrying roughly 270 people, including passengers and crew.

Flight tracking data showed the aircraft cruising over the Pacific Ocean when it suddenly reversed course and headed toward San Francisco International Airport.
While many passengers were understandably confused, the reason turned out to be surprisingly simple.
Somehow, a United pilot forgot his passport, and only realized it mid-flight.
United later confirmed the situation in a statement, explaining that the aircraft diverted because the pilot lacked the required travel document.

Once the plane landed in San Francisco, the airline arranged for a replacement crew so the flight could continue to Shanghai later that evening.
Passengers were reportedly given meal vouchers and compensation while waiting for the new crew.
Although the delay was frustrating, the aircraft eventually resumed its journey and landed in Shanghai roughly six hours later than originally scheduled.
Pilots and crew members don’t have their passports scanned as often
At first glance, it might seem surprising that a pilot forgot his passport, given how important a document it is.
However, airline crew members operate under a slightly different process than passengers when it comes to travel documentation.
Passengers typically have their passports checked multiple times during check-in, security screening, and boarding.

Pilots and flight attendants, on the other hand, usually move through dedicated crew channels designed to speed up international operations.
While they are still required to carry passports for international routes, those documents are not always scanned as frequently during the boarding process.
Without a passport, the pilot would not have been able to legally clear immigration upon arrival in China.

Continuing the flight could have caused even bigger problems.
Immigration authorities might have denied entry to the crew member, potentially forcing the airline to keep them on the aircraft until the return journey.
In some situations, airlines can also face regulatory penalties if crew members arrive without proper documentation.
In other words, turning back early was the simplest solution.
If you’ve ever kicked yourself for forgetting to pack something before a trip, you can at least seek solace in the fact that your mistake didn’t cost hundreds of thousands of dollars in losses.
