This guy traveled from Utah to Texas to recover a ship that looks halfway between a fishing boat and something out of a Pirates of the Caribbean movie.
The boat, which is actually a shrimping boat, looks great, but it had been stranded for weeks, buried in sand.
Salvaging wasn’t easy.
In fact, it was so difficult that the guy ended up thinking he should’ve walked away instead.
This is certainly a cool-looking boat
The first thing that stands out is the vessel’s design.
This is the Buccaneer, a 200,000-pound shrimping boat that actually looks pretty cool.
It has two masts, a pointy bow, and a cabin that looks like the sort of thing we expect from a movie. We can totally picture a bearded captain calling ‘mayday’ at the helm in a thunderstorm.
Or something like that.

Still, the problem was not that the boat was ugly or damaged; it was stranded.
When the YouTuber HeavyDSparks arrived – all the way from Utah – he realized the she had run aground near a sandbar off Crystal Beach, Texas.
It had been stranded there for weeks, and it was now buried in over three feet of sand.

Getting it out was a nightmare
Salvaging Buccaneer was a nightmare.
It started with a 40-page salvage plan, a 20-page transit plan, and HeavyDSparks had to coordinate with federal, state, and local agencies for environmental and legal reasons.
After that, he had to transport heavy machinery to the location, including a massive amphibious excavator.

The team dug a trench around the vessel and built a berm to prepare a pool for the fishing boat to float during high tide.
Everything had been carefully planned and organized and ultimately that paid off.

They were expecting to spend days getting the job done.
But, amazingly, they successfully freed the Buccaneer by lunchtime on the second day, and then they managed to tow it to the harbor.
Not a bad result at all.
