Based on a video game concept, the Volkswagen Golf GTI Roadster was never supposed to hit the road. Now, its online popularity has pushed the $2,000,000 supercar into reality, and it could have been a real Corvette slayer.

Volkswagen isn’t a name instantly associated with supercars, but it’s actually the parent brand of the Bugatti Chiron, Lamborghini Aventador, and Porsche 911 Carrera S.

Its own supercar, the Volkswagen Golf GTI Roadster, was first announced in 2014 but didn’t make it to the production line.

Now, the Supercar Blondie team has visited VW HQ and tested the concept car, and it’s safe to say that it’s quite a shame this vehicle never hit the shop floor.

Behind the wheel of the Volkswagen Golf GTI Roadster

Thanks to the power of video games, many manufacturers create wild concepts to be placed inside titles like Gran Turismo, knowing that they have little intention of bringing them to the roads.

Some do, though, as the popularity of the vehicles tempts the brands to bring their ideas to life, such as the Lamborghini Vision.

Another of those is the Volkswagen Golf GTI Roadster, which debuted in Gran Turismo 6 and has now been turned into a one-off supercar concept.

And we’ve been in it.

In a new upload to our YouTube channel, host Tetyana gets behind the wheel of the 3.0L V6 biturbo engine, producing 503hp and a top speed of 192mph.

The two-seater open-top is a fantastic beast to look at with a huge rear wing and carbon blades that engulf the entire bodywork.

The Volkswagen Golf GTI Roadster boasts a stunning interior too, with the design team sparing no expense for the race-ready bucket seats and dash.

Corvette is breathing a sigh of relief that it never hit the market

While the Volkswagen Golf GTI Roadster is scheduled to appear at shows around Europe, its rivals will be relieved it never came to life sooner.

Open-top supercars like the Corvette Stingray would have been directly in its crosshairs, and knowing the reputation of brands like Bugatti and Lambo, you’d expect punters wouldn’t be put off by its $2 million price tag.

Alas, the spectacular vehicle will stay as a concept car.

But, if the brand can be influenced to make something like this based on feedback from a video game, who’s to say that the compliments for this concept won’t tempt them to make it for real and set it loose on the streets?
