It feels so random to think that people are fighting over tickets to get a behind-the-scenes view of what goes on inside car factories, but they’re some of the hottest tickets you can get your hands on in China.

The factory tours started as one-off events for investors, dignitaries, and journalists, but now automakers like Nio, Xiaomi, and BYD have expanded their tour capacities for people to sign up – and boy did they sign up.

This excitement around EVs being built may seem bizarre, but maybe it’s because BYD, Nio and Xiaomi have production lines that are 90 percent automated, and who doesn’t want to see robots?

China’s hottest attraction is… watching how EVs are made

If you ever travel to China, then you might want to check out some of the biggest tourist attractions like the Great Wall or the Summer Palace, or the hottest ticket in China: a behind-the-scenes tour of a car factory.

That’s right, the hottest spots to visit are the almost fully-automated production lines at EV factories at companies like Nio, BYD and Xiaomi.

If you like the sound of getting a tour, then you’ll have to get in line, a very long line in fact, due to the 27,000 people who signed up to be within a chance of touring the Xiaomi factory.

Initially the tours were one-offs for visiting dignitaries, journalists and investors, but now the opportunity to visit has been opened up to the public and the public just kept coming.

Good luck beating 27,000 people to a ticket

Next month, Xiaomi decided to expand their tours to allow 1,100 people per month through the car factory doors, but even then the tech company turned automaker had 27,000 applications.

In comparison, Nio had 130,000 visitors to its factory last year alone, so it really seems like a fun day out for anyone.

Why are these tours so popular? Maybe it’s to do with the fact that you get to see an almost completely automated assembly line in action, and that is quite a sight, just robots as far as the eye can see.

At the Xiaomi factory, there’s even a gift shop and a chance to test drive an SU7, so it genuinely does sound like a properly good day out.
