Formula 1 championship leader Charles Leclerc was robbed of his $320,000 Richard Mille watch in Italy after he was swarmed by fans.

The Ferrari driver was out with some friends including his trainer Andrea Ferrari, in the Tuscan city of Viareggio on Monday at 10pm.

While out, they encountered a group of fans who wanted photos taken.

But in the chaos, a thief dove in and snatched the watch from Charles’ wrist and ran away with it.

Leclerc reported the robbery to the police, who are currently investigating and looking into whether the robbery was spontaneous or planned in advance.

The watch in question is the Richard Mille RM 67-02 Charles Leclerc Prototype, which is worth upwards of $320,000.

This ultra-lightweight timepiece was designed specifically with Formula 1 in mind and even wears the colours of Leclerc’s hometown Monaco.

It features a skeletonized dial and is finished in titanium – which is why it is so light on the wrist.
