America’s Doomsday plane was built to survive in national emergencies, such as nuclear attacks, but it turns out that inside the cabin, the technology is four decades old.
The Boeing jet has high-tech elements as you’d expect, and can even allow the President to give orders securely in the air.
Unexpectedly, though, driving the plane forward is aging technology that desperately needs an overhaul.
Don’t fear, though, as by 2036, there could be a new and improved version cruising in US skies, if all goes to plan.

Keeping the US safe – this is what the ‘Doomsday Plane’ is really made of
The US Air Force has a vast network of aircraft to ensure optimum safety.
Built to withstand nuclear attacks, the ‘Doomsday Plane’ is one of the biggest and most powerful that the country has under its belt.

The E-4B Nightwatch has the duty of being the National Airborne Operations Center, necessary in times of national emergency, with four in the E-4 fleet that are all individually powered by four engines.
Historically, the E-4B took inspiration from its predecessor, known as the E-4A, which first explored the skies in 1974, with the B taking over from 1980.
The planes can fly at extremely high altitudes and have communication systems that allow the president to securely give orders, with other defense systems including nuclear and thermal effects shielding and acoustic control.
The main deck of the plane is reportedly sectioned off into six areas consisting of a briefing room, a conference room, a command work area, a rest area, a communications area, and an operations team work area.
And at least one of the fleet is on alert 24/7, meaning the ‘Doomsday Plane’ is ready and raring to go at all times.

Plus, the plane is also used as a support vessel to the Federal Emergency Management Agency and provides help in situations of natural disasters, like earthquakes, while also having a passenger capacity of up to 100.
Now, we know what you’re thinking: The plane looks familiar.
Well, the ‘Doomsday Plane’ is actually a heavily modified Boeing 747.
But that’s not all.
Here’s why the plane still uses tech from the 1980s
Even though the plane is made to fight modern-day challenges, it turns out that the ‘Doomsday Plane’ actually uses technology from 45 years ago.
There’s a simple answer for this: huge planes are very hard to get hold of.
The fleet relies on the old parts from the 1980s, which aren’t easy to replace, and thanks to wear and tear, they have reportedly had to be used less often than before.
But don’t fear.
Both science and technology are rapidly evolving, and newer planes will be used to keep America and Government officials safe sooner than you think.
In fact, in 2036, the planes will get a new lease of life thanks to a brand new $13 billion deal awarded to Sierra Nevada Corp.
So, keep your eyes peeled as the new ‘Doomsday Plane’ isn’t far off.
