In an industry that’s been dominated by brands that joined the electric movement early, like Tesla, Ford, and Hyundai, the current fastest-selling EV comes from a fresh-faced rival chasing world domination.
While electric car sales have boomed in the last two years, they’ve actually been around for much longer.
Tesla specifically has dominated the worldwide sales of EVs for over a decade, ever since the Model S came out in 2012, and has been able to get a chokehold on the industry, despite the best efforts from its rivals.
But its grasp has now slipped, and the electric car industry has seen a new company crowned, Chinese maker BYD, which is now producing the fastest-selling EV in the world.

The fastest-selling EV in the world: the BYD Denza D9 MPV
Back in 2022, the BYD Denza D9 MPV was announced as the latest SUV to come from the Chinese EV experts.
Looking like something that should have a royal or high-profile celeb at the wheel, it screams luxury and comfort with its sheer size, and people were stunned to find that prices for the car would be extremely low.
So much so that the Chinese manufacturer has now revealed that it has delivered its 300,000th model, making it the fastest-selling EV.
The company revealed that 41 percent of the buyers chose the top spec, proving it’s not just a way for anyone to experience the luxury of a six-figure car for a third of the price; the Denza D9 is also a winner with those already accustomed to the finer things in life.
And all of this comes without the American market.

So far, Chinese vehicles have not been permitted to be sold in the US, although that door could soon be opened.
Should that happen, the Denza D9 would likely be a massive rival for the Cadillac Escalade fleet and like-minded luxury SUVs.
As the fastest-selling EV, it also puts the Tesla Model Y, Ford F-150 Lightning, and the Hyundai Ioniq 9 in its crosshairs.
Key Features: BYD Denza D9 MPV
Powertrain: Plug-in Hybrid (1.5 L turbo petrol engine) producing 407hp, or AWD fully-automatic EV with 313hp
Top Speed: 112mph
0-62 mph: 7.9 seconds
Drive Modes: Standard, Economy, Sport, and Snow
Starting Price: $32,784

BYD eyes global domination with yet another mass-selling EV
This comes as the latest attempt from BYD to conquer the entire EV landscape.
It already broke the glass ceiling for the most EV sales, usurping Tesla in a watershed moment.
And its flagship sedans are doing the heavy lifting throughout Europe.
Now, the fastest-selling EV being an SUV marks a clear intent from the Chinese brand to be a staple of that genre too.

Its new cars, such as the Leopard 5, have signaled its unrelenting desire to be a leader in all branches of car manufacturing.
2026 will be a crucial year for the likes of Tesla, Ford, and Hyundai, as all three are chancing it with vehicles produced in China and Europe, in a bid to level the playing field.
