This young US pilot was detained for two months after landing in Antarctica

Ethan Guo has made a name for himself flying around the world in his Cessna plane.

When he was 19, he started a fund-raising campaign for cancer research which involved him trying to fly solo to all seven continents.

His efforts were shared on social media and amassed quite the following.

But things took a turn for the worse in June when Guo landed in the seventh continent – Antarctica.

He was accused of landing at a Chilean base on King George Island without authorization, and detained.

He was fined $30k and banned from entering Chilean territory for three years, but a charge that he had provided false flight information was dropped.

The $30,000 fine went to a children’s cancer charity.

According to Guo’s lawyer, the 20-year-old has left the base on a Navy ship and will be heading back to America.

“He is in good spirits and is looking forward to returning to the United States as soon as possible,” The New York Times reported

During his time at the base, Guo was living in a single room within the air force barracks.

What will happen to Ethan Guo’s Cessna?

At this point in time, Guo’s Cessna remains in Antarctica.

Guo’s lawyer is working with Chilean authorities to arrange for a pilot to fly the plane back to the mainland.

Once reunited with his plane, Guo said he was looking forward to ‘resuming my global fight against cancer’.

Here’s hoping he can get back up into the air soon and raise more money for a noble cause.
