An LA car enthusiast compared a Tesla Model Y Long Range with a Mustang Mach-E and made an interesting discovery when it came to charging.
Both vehicles have some obvious things in common: they’re both all-electric; they’re both SUVs; they were both introduced in 2019; they even have similar 0-60mph times – 3.5 seconds for the Tesla and 3.6 for the Mustang Mach-E.
So it’s natural that the two EVs are often compared to try and determine which is the better buy.
But when it comes to charging, one car enthusiast couldn’t help but point out one very big difference.

The Tesla Model Y Vs the Mustang Mach-E
There have been plenty of comparisons made between the Tesla Model Y and the Mustang Mach-E, such as this one that pitted them against each other in a drag race.
The team from the ChargeGo YouTube channel also did a comparison of the two vehicles.

He started by noting that the Tesla was a little cheaper to buy and more efficient but that the Mustang had sleeker styling and ‘really stands out’.
However, it was when he got to the charging that he really noticed some big differences.
He pointed out that the Mustang Mach-E uses the Combined Charging System (CCS), which means that to charge it you’ll need to use a system like the Electrify America network of chargers.
Now, this may not sound like such a bad thing, but the YouTuber warned that out and about CCS charging often left a lot to be desired.
The YouTuber was less than impressed with the charging system
“The issue is that a lot of people don’t understand how bad CCS charging is,” he said in the clip, before going on to say that when trialing the two vehicles ‘every single [CCS] charging station’ they visited either had broken stalls or serious connection issues.
In comparison, he said that charging a Tesla was generally a more straightforward process given that Tesla charging stations are ‘basically everywhere’.
“You plug it in – you don’t have to deal with anything – it starts charging within, like, 10 seconds and you have a seamless charging experience every single time.”
Of course, the claims made in the clip are purely anecdotal and there are plenty of folks out there who use CCS charging stations day in, day out for their daily drivers.
And you can now charge many non-Tesla EVs, including the Mustang Mach-E at Supercharger stations, you’ll just need to use a NACS Fast Charging Adapter.
