For most folks, a million dollars is a serious amount of money, but it wasn’t quite enough for one car-lover to get their hands on this 1968 Bizzarrini 5300 GT America.

The Bizzarrini 5300 GT America was produced between 1966 and 1968.

The low-slung, two-seater was developed as a lower-cost version of the Bizzarrini Strada for the US market.

Just 10 units were produced, making these cars incredibly rare, which contributed to their steep price tag.

What makes the 1968 Bizzarrini 5300 GT America so special

With so few made, it’s not every day you see a 1968 Bizzarrini 5300 GT America.

And it’s even rarer still to see them come up for auction.

However, this pristine example recently appeared on Bring a Trailer.

The car is chassis number 0282, and was delivered new into the US.

It’s had a handful of owners over the decades since, and underwent a top-notch refurbishment in 2010.

More recently, the car has had a service, which included a refresh of its fuel and brake systems.

All in all, the 1968 Bizzarrini 5300 GT America looks as good as new.

The car is finished in a deep blue with gleaming chrome bumpers to the front and rear, and sits on silver-painted Campagnolo magnesium alloy wheels with Avon tires.

The refurbished interior features fixed bucket seats wrapped in gray leather, with matching leather door panels, dashboard, and rear shelf, as well as a gray carpet.

The refurb also included some rewiring to several of the dashboard switches, and replacements for the heater cable and windshield wiper.

Under the hood, there’s a 5.3-liter Chevrolet V8 engine paired with a four-speed manual transmission that produces up to 365 horsepower and 287-lb-ft of torque.

Despite being almost 60 years old, the Bizzarrini 5300 GT America has only done a little over 8,000 miles.

The classic car attracted a top bid of more than $1 million

The 1968 Bizzarrini 5300 GT America is an absolutely jaw-dropping example.

So, as you might imagine, it drew a flurry of excitement when it appeared up for auction recently.

It received a total of 25 bids, with a final top bid of $1,025,000.

However, despite someone offering more than a cool million for the classic car, the dealer refused to part with it, and the auction was officially closed.

What’s next for the car remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: whoever wants the vintage vehicle in their garage will need deep pockets.
