Ah, the Shelby Mustang.

The name alone evokes visceral, emotional images and thoughts of iconic cars of yesteryear.

It also evokes noise. A lot of noise. A beautiful, V8 symphony of horsepower.

And now, a Mustang with one of the most powerful engines ever has come up for sale.

Shelby x Ford: A match made in Heaven

By now, you will likely already know who Carroll Shelby is.

The legendary Texan, who started life as a chicken farmer, began his car customization business in 1961.

After retiring from racing due to ill-health, he started working with British company AC on their car, the Ace.

After AC agreed to supply the chassis, and Ford agreed to provide the V8 engines, the holy union was born and the Shelby AC Cobra was created.

The success of this project led to Shelby and Ford’s relationship deepening.

Eventually, the Texan was brought in to work on the Ford GT40 car project, alongside the driver Ken Miles.

Shelby’s work on the Mark II GT40 culminated in the highlight of his career – defeating Ferrari at the 1966 Le Mans, as well as overseeing a Ford 1-2-3 finish.

Alongside this, the Texas native and the Blue Oval brand collaborated on the GT350 and GT500 Mustangs.

Shelby produced the GT500 through 1967 and 1968, before allowing Ford to take over Mustang production in 1968. He would retire in 1970.

Ford takes the Mustang in-house

In 1968, Ford began producing the Mustang in-house under the Shelby brand.

In April of 1968, Ford began putting their own engine into the GT500 Mustang.

This was called the 428 Cobra Jet V8.

Some variations of the GT500 Cobra Jet came with a Drag Pack option, which came with different options to improve the car at drag racing.

Now, some variations of the Drag Pack came with the convertible GT500, making it even rarer and more desirable.

Shining example of Shelby GT500 Super Cobra Jet

Now, a stunning example of the GT500 Super Cobra Jet has reared its head.

We should note that this is not a factory original, unfortunately.

This example has an aftermarket exhaust, as well as a brand new Holley carburetor and new headers.

However, it is still a pristine example of a truly wonderful muscle car.

It comes in a factory candy apple red finish, as well as all-black interior.

The beastly, 7.0 liter engine produced an estimated 335bhp, with around 440lbs of torque.

The power from the beastly 428 Cobra Jet was transmitted by a four-speed, close-ratio transmission.

So, if you fancy yourself a 1969 Shelby Mustang GT500 Super Cobra Jet, then this might just be the one for you.
