This American man set about turning a 1992 Nissan 300ZX into an electric supercar with twin Tesla motors.

Jeremy Snow, the host of YouTube channel Electric Supercar, wanted to give a Nissan an upgrade that would bring it into the 21st century.

And nothing says 21st century quite like electrification.

But how many real-world miles would his creation manage once it was subjected to range testing?

Plenty of older cars have been given the EV treatment in recent years

As EVs become more and more popular, more gas car owners have been making the switch.

For most, this would involve heading down to their local dealership and making a purchase.

But for a select few, this process has looked a lot different, as it involved a literal transformation of their gas car.

One California man gave his 2001 Volkswagen Passat the EV treatment and subsequently racked up more than 90,000 miles on it over the next 10 years.

For one man, it cost less than $40,000 to transform his 1966 Ford Mustang into an EV with the help of a Tesla Autopilot system.

And it’s not just individuals taking the initiative either – one British company is electrifying a classic Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow, while a Dutch company is carrying out similar transformations with Land Rover Defenders.

Joining the movement is Jeremy Snow, the host of YouTube channel Electric Supercar.

Would converting the 1992 Nissan 300ZX into an EV prove to be an easy job?

The car that he had his mind set on converting was the 1992 Nissan 300ZX, as requested by a customer.

This was the end result of months of work, with just the final tasks required to ensure it was complete.

Among these tasks was the job of installing custom laser-cut metal panels, removing the fiberglass rear battery cover to add sound-dampening foam, and integrating stock metal skid plates from a Tesla Model 3 to fit the car’s converted subframes.

At the final weigh-in, the car was 3,892Ibs once the dual motors and battery pack were installed.

Now it was time for the ultimate test – a range test.

What range testing revealed about this car’s range testing

The team had their own predictions about how many miles the Nissan would manage, with most guesses falling around the 125 to 135 miles mark, based on a previous Toyota pickup that had achieved around 100 miles on the same battery pack.

Taking the car out on the road, they didn’t hold back in pushing the car to the max, taking it through town and two separate canyon runs.

The car handled well – the cabin was quiet, the handling was nimble, and there was rapid off-the-line AWD acceleration.

“This one is very quiet. It’s really an enjoyable ride. So, I am jealous that the customer is going to drive this every day,” Snow remarked.

All in all, it managed 150 miles with 32 percent battery left.

That left them calculating an effective usable range of between 185 and 190 miles.

“That’s almost double what we did for the Toyota with the same battery pack. I think that goes to show you things like tires as well as aerodynamics play a big, big part,” Snow said.
