Back in 2012, a Chevy Silverado 3500HD reached a remarkable milestone: one million miles on the odometer in just six years.

That’s an average of over 500 miles per day, every day, since the owners bought the truck brand new in 2006.

Even more impressive, the heavy-duty pickup was still going strong a year later, clocking in at over 1.2 million miles.

The owners credit two key factors for their truck’s exceptional longevity: consistent maintenance and proper preventive care.

Don’t skimp on maintenance

Hugh and Tammy Pennington used their Silverado 3500HD for long-haul trailer delivery, transporting campers and trailers across the US and Canada.

The business started when Tammy volunteered to help after Hurricane Katrina, purchasing the truck in Georgia to support disaster recovery efforts.

Since then, it’s been hauling freight across thousands of miles of interstate, highways, and backroads.

While their work keeps them on the road constantly, the couple also sees it as an opportunity to explore.

“I’m getting paid to see the world,” Hugh said.

The key to reaching a million miles, they say, is diligent, timely maintenance.

That means regular oil changes, checking fluid levels, changing filters, and using the right type of oil.

According to Hugh, religiously sticking to an oil change schedule is what kept their engine running reliably across so many miles.

This is great advice, because unless you’re driving an Aston Martin Vantage or a Bugatti Veyron, your oil changes probably don’t cost thousands of dollars, so it’s good to get into that habit.

Even small steps like flushing the engine to prevent build-up made a noticeable difference.

Prevention is better than cure

The Penningtons also prioritize preventative care, such as washing the truck after long trips, especially during Canadian winters, when road salt can cause rust and corrosion.

Cleaning the undercarriage and protecting the paint has helped preserve the truck’s condition over time.

Hugh noted that salt damage isn’t just a cosmetic concern; it can ruin structural components if left unchecked.

They also emphasize the importance of having a trusted mechanic, because you might be doing simple things wrong the entire time.

“If you hear a new sound or feel something off, don’t ignore it,” Hugh said.

According to him, getting small issues diagnosed early can prevent major, costly failures later on.

Their Silverado 3500HD is a testament to what’s possible with the right habits and a little dedication.

While their truck might not be the only one to reach a million miles, it is still a milestone that most vehicles don’t hit.

Hence, their story proves that with routine maintenance and proper care, you can push the limits of vehicle durability.
