Down in the Lead State, some abandoned cars have overstayed their welcome at a Missouri Airport by more than a few months in an unusual turn of events.

Airport parking is often a task many of us dread, but these daily drivers have been enjoying the perks of one particular lot for years on end.

When the time came to figure out the true story behind one Missouri airport’s unusual guests, the unexpected unfolded before workers’ eyes.

But it turns out that the cars’ vacation could be ongoing after officials revealed the actual timeline for their removal.

Long-term parking has been given a whole new meaning at one Missouri airport

Springfield-Branson National Airport in Missouri is used to having vehicles sitting on the ground before takeoff, but it turns out that a whole different mode of transport had been harboring space outside the departure lounge.

25 abandoned cars had been left there by various owners, with some spending up to three or four years in the airport parking lot without anyone coming back for them.

Yes, they were quite literally stuck in time.

Now, there could be a reason for this, such as people going on extended holidays or even working abroad.

But you have to admit, being without your car for years on end is impractical, especially at an airport that falls on the smaller side.

As you can imagine, many of the cars had flat tires and looked a little worse for wear, but however bad they appeared to be, it turns out that there was no big rush when it came to actually moving them.

“At some point, we’ll tow them. I don’t know what that timeline is,” Airport worker Kent Boyd told KY3 News.

He explained that there was no point in towing or getting rid of any of the abandoned cars early because ‘as you do that, somebody will show up looking for it’.

There’s method to the madness, but three years’ worth of rusting shells sitting at the Missouri airport can’t be a good thing by any means.

Staff got a huge shock when searching for one owner of the abandoned cars

In an attempt to track down an owner, ‘tags’ were run on one of the cars by the Missouri airport, according to KY3.

But, after investigating who had previously called the car their own, airport staff received a huge shock that ended with a big twist.

“We were able to trace back, and we found an obituary for the registered owner.

“We contacted the estate and asked if they can please come get this car, and they still haven’t,” Kent Boyd continued.

So, that one was one accounted for in a sad turn of events, but the other owners and cars’ backstories remain a huge mystery.
