The humble first car owned by our very own Alex Hirschi, AKA Supercar Blondie, remains the starting point for the global Supercar Blondie brand and her career as an automotive journalist.

This family hand-me-down was a manual Mitsubishi Lancer that struggled to reach the top of small hills without the air conditioning being turned off.

That basic runaround is a stark contrast to the multi-million dollar machinery she commands today in the luxury hubs of the world.

The transition from a budget sedan to an international media empire involved a series of high-stakes career pivots that changed the landscape of digital car journalism forever.

The first car that launched a legend

The first car Alex Hirschi drove was a manual transmission model that instilled in her a technical appreciation for the mechanics of driving.

Alex describes the Lancer as a vehicle that offered freedom rather than status, serving as a tool for basic transportation while she studied journalism.

“It was passed down through the siblings and was a bit of a rust pail by the time I got it,” Alex recalls.

“But I did not care because it just meant freedom and independence.”

Going from budget hand-me-down to a professional role in Dubai occurred after she spent years working as a news presenter on local radio.

During her tenure in broadcasting, a chance weekend loan of a Bentley Continental sparked the transition into digital publishing.

Alex admitted she didn’t even know such opportunities existed at the time: “Bentley contacted me to ask how I’d feel about taking a car for the weekend and reporting back on my experience.

“I didn’t even know that was possible!”

This specific Bentley served as her first encounter with manufacturer press cars, which are vehicles provided to a journalist for review purposes.

She documented the experience for a small social media following, and saw the interest in accessible, enthusiast-driven content.

Unlike the existing car journalism landscape, which often prioritized technical specifications and engine data, she focused on design and unique interior features.

As she put it: “I’m someone who appreciates the ornamental appearance of a car, and I love driving them.”

This editorial shift allowed her to grow a following that now reaches over 120 million people globally.

As an car journalist, she identified a gap in the market for content that felt inclusive to non-experts.

The success of the Supercar Blondie brand stems from the decision to maintain a conversational and relatable tone in everything she writes and produces.

By focusing on the design of hypercars rather than just horsepower, she built a platform that appeals to families and general enthusiasts.

This growth eventually meant that being a car journo needed her full-time attention, leading her to resign from her radio position in 2017 to focus entirely on Supercar Blondie.

Building the SBX billion-dollar garage

The current trajectory for Alex and her Supercar Blondie persona involves moving beyond traditional content creation.

A primary focus for the team is the expansion of SBX Cars, which operates as a specialized digital auction house for rare and high-value vehicles.

This platform addresses a huge gap in the market, allowing billionaires and collectors to trade their cars without the need for physical transport to a central auction site, saving money in the process.

The business has already proven how well this can work by facilitating multi-million dollar sales of cars like the Lamborghini Veneno.

By integrating her background as a motoring journalist with a dedicated sales platform, she’s creating a vertically integrated media and commerce company.

The organization now employs over 85 people and continues to seek new investment to accelerate its global reach.

The journey from a family’s first car to the leadership of a major media entity reflects a shift in how car news is consumed.

Alex Hirschi managed to turn a personal interest in the driving experience into a profitable and influential network.

While the vehicles she handles today are vastly different from her original Mitsubishi, the core principle of celebrating automotive innovation remains the same.

The brand is now positioned to dominate the luxury auction market as it continues to bridge the gap between social media entertainment and high-end car sales.
