Check out the WaterCar Panther – a custom-built amphibious vehicle that looks like a Jeep Wrangler and can hit impressive speeds on water and land.

The WaterCar Panther is certainly one of the more unusual vehicles out there.

It was unveiled in 2013, following 14 years of development by California-based WaterCar founder Dave March.

It can hit a top speed of 85mph (137km/h) on land, and a slower – but still pretty speedy – 45mph (72km/h) on water.

This means its speed on the water is more than enough to pull along a waterski.

When it comes to amphibious vehicles, there are some folks who opt for the DIY route.

Such as this former school teacher who spent more than a decade planning and building his, or this father and son duo who transformed a Ford Mustang.

But if DIY engineering isn’t your strong suit, then WaterCar has you covered with its amphibious Jeep-lookalike.

The Panther has a lightweight steel chassis and a fiberglass body, which helps keep it light on the water.

Its four wheels can be hydraulically retracted, which boosts its performance on the water by cutting back on drag.

Smart, right?

The Panther is available in three trims, with the most powerful model equipped with a 3.7 liter Honda Acura V6 engine which produces 305 horsepower.

As well as top land-speed of 85mph, the Panther can do 0-60mph (0-96km/h) in just 4.5 seconds

The amphibious vehicle looks a lot like a Jeep

Not only is it a powerful piece of kit, it really looks the part.

You can easily imagine having to do a double take if you glanced across the water and saw one of these headed towards the shore.

The WaterCar Panther can comfortably seat four passengers and has a roll bar, fold-away fabric roof and bow-mounted tow hook.

When on land, the Panther is a rear-wheel drive vehicle, while on water it has a jet propulsion system to power it along.

The vehicle has a ‘seamless’ land to water transition time of just 15 seconds – and did we mention that it looks really cool?
