With the emergence of high-performance EVs, drag races have shifted monumentally this year, as we’ve seen cars motoring off the line like never before. But as the year closes, these are the drag races in 2025 that left us shook.

It feels like we’ve seen almost every high-quality drag race out there from the old guard. Seriously, how many times can we watch a Dodge Challenger burnout its opponent?

Now, it’s the age of motorized acceleration, as 0-60 and quarter-mile speed records are getting smashed every month.

With Tesla, Lucid, and BYD at the helm, these are the best drag races in 2025.

Lucid Air vs Tesla Model S Plaid

Starting off big, this is the showdown that everyone wanted in 2025, as the Lucid Air continued to set unfathomable times over short periods.

But the Model S Plaid has a worthwhile reputation as the king of the strip, so it was time to put the two against each other.

Hosted by DragTimes, the Lucid Air vs Tesla Model S Plaid was an early contender for race of the year from January 3, as it lived up to the hype.

A blowing gale and icy cold conditions disrupted the peak performance, but it was the Tesla Model S Plaid that held onto its crown in the early parts of this year, by absolutely dominating the Lucid in every form of drag racing.

Tesla Cybertruck vs gas-powered Ram TRX

We’ve already noted that this is the EV era, but we all wanted to see just how far some of the most advanced tech has come when up against the peak of gas-powered performance.

The Cybertruck – or in this instance, the Cyberbeast – is the heavyweight champion of the EV world, as most entered the sedan industry first, but how would it go against the bodybuilder that is the RAM TRX?

Well, decked out in a green wrap that would put The Grinch to shame, these two mammoth vehicles lined up for an absolute slogfest of a drag race, and there was one clear winner.

To little surprise, with a tri-motor setup that delivers 845 horsepower in its launch mode, the Cybertruck zipped off to an early lead in an off-the-mark setting, and the RAM TRX simply couldn’t find the pace to catch up before the line.

Maybe it would have been a different story on a rolling start, with the RAM TRX entering its stride after the 30mph mark, but it was simply too heavy off the line to ever stand a chance against the new era-leading truck.

Tesla Cybertruck vs. Hummer EV drag race

Sticking with the Cybertruck – this time the standard version – another SUV decided it was worth a go at unseating the large-sized reigning champion.

This time, it was a Hummer EV. Having been a stalwart figure of drag racing throughout history, the Hummer’s first electric vehicle makes the Cybertruck look small and offers a powertrain of over 1,000hp.

But, does it boast the pace, while carrying such muscle?

Well, it was no slam dunk, that’s for sure, as this was more like watching Shaquille O’Neal run against a prime Marshawn Lynch.

This might have been the most dominant set of drag races in 2025, as even the Hummer EV driver was stunned at how quickly the Cybertruck gets off the line.

As for the Tesla, in repeated races, it continued to obliterate its opponent and show why it’s one of the fastest EVs out there, even with such a frame.

BYD Sealion 7 vs Tesla Model X

Tesla, Tesla, and Teslas. The throne has been dominated by the brand so far, so as BYD entered the game, could it unseat the wild fleet of cars on the drag strip, just as it has on the worldwide EV market?

Earlier this year, popular car review site carwow put the two brands’ SUVs against each other in one of the more unusual drag races in 2025.

Still, it put on quite a show. With the Model Y Juniper and the Sealion 7 not being the first names on the drag race team sheet, viewers had no idea what to expect, aside from some serious pace.

Both cars were neck and neck throughout one of the closest drag races in 2025, with just 0.4 seconds separating the pair at the finish line, both in the 12-second zone.

With a weight undercut of 1,000lbs, it was the Model Y that pipped its opponent to the post, giving a clean sweep for Tesla throughout this list.

Tesla hasn’t dominated every race, though, as the new Chinese supercar Xiaomi SU7 deserves a mention for storming ahead of the notorious Model S Plaid in a different drag race.

1969 Camaro vs The Ground

Now onto the last of our nail-biting drag races in 2025, this is something different entirely.

Back with gas-powered cars, this 1969 Camaro has been turned into an absolute speed demon by a Dom Toretto-inspired turbocharger, and was taken to the drag strip – and off it – in sensational style.

Using the wheelie technique for its rear-wheel takeoff, the Camaro soared into the sky as if it were a Spitfire jet.

The stunt was handled by professionals and wasn’t a part of the actual race (which would have ended in a resounding loss to the Camaro), but it made for a wild spectacle nonetheless.

Heading into 2026, the drag race scene can expect new challengers on the EV front by the likes of Dodge, while fresh-faced hybrid supercars from Chevy and Ferrari will likely heat up the competition pool.

But it’s game over for everyone if the Tesla Roadster 2 lives up to expectations.
