This BMW 7 Series looks absolutely stock, but it isn’t.

Beneath its unassuming exterior lies an impressive layer of ballistic defense.

Achieving this level of protection without ruining the styling must’ve been difficult, but they pulled it off.

There’s only a minor caveat, though.

This standard-looking 7 Series can stop Magnum cartridges

The BMW Concept 7 Protection is a heavily armored luxury sedan that looks almost entirely stock from the outside, which is quite difficult to achieve.

Despite being looking totally normal, this 7 Series is capable of stopping rounds up to and including .44 Magnum cartridges.

The doors are reinforced with specialized ballistic steel combined with composite elements and – this is truly amazing – the manufacturer somehow managed to preserve the 7 Series’ signature panoramic glass roof.

They achieved this by hiding a protective layer of steel and fiber-reinforced composite directly beneath the glass, the exterior roofline remains completely unaltered.

This is a very heavy car

Bulletproof cars are inevitably very heavy, which is why the German automaker decided to use the powertrain from the M760e xDrive.

This plug-in hybrid setup combines a 3.0-liter turbocharged straight-six engine with an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed transmission, pushing out a combined 612 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque.

Engineers also recalibrated the chassis, braking systems, and driver assistance technology to ensure that the armored sedan handles and drives just like a standard production model.

Fuel consumption numbers were not quoted, but we bet they wouldn’t look too good.

Who is this BMW 7 Series for?

We mentioned a minor caveat, and the caveat is that this is just a concept car for now.

You can’t go buy one.

In general, while tuners occasionally do offer bulletproof cars as standard production vehicles, legacy manufacturers often only build them on request, usually for a head of state or sometimes for high-profile and high-net-worth individuals.

The bottom line is, you won’t be able to walk into your nearest BMW dealer today and ask for the ‘bulletproof 7 Series’.

Because the dealer will probably go: “The what?”
