Boston Dynamics shows off incredible Atlas project

The Consumer Electronics Show, AKA CES, is an annual event that showcases the latest in innovation.

And the Las Vegas tech spectacle has just played host to a fascinating event.

That is because Boston Dynamics has just revealed something amazing.

The MIT-spinoff company is owned by Hyundai and based in Waltham, Massachusetts.

And its latest reveal is something extremely impressive.

During the course of the CES event, Boston Dynamics unveiled the Atlas robot.

Boston Dynamics has also confirmed that it ‘will begin production of the new Atlas robots at its Boston headquarters immediately.’

As you might imagine, the robot looks exactly like… well, a robot.

But the story behind the Atlas is very interesting in itself.

The project was actually first conceived back in 2013, and was the result of a competition overseen by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).

Boston Dynamics presented the Atlas as a six-foot-tall, human-like design.

It would also weigh 300lbs (150kg).

Since the beginning, the Atlas has been imagined for industrial applications.

And there is a clear development plan in mind for the project.

At first, it is expected to be focused on simple tasks like parts sequencing.

By the start of the 2030s, however, it will evolve to perform more complex tasks.

These could include component assembly, repetitive motions, and heavy-load transportation.

Company is backed by automotive giants

At this point, you might be wondering something.

How on Earth is a small robotics company capable of such a major project?

Well, that is because Boston Dynamics is owned by an absolute giant – Hyundai.

The South Korean company has officially owned the firm since 2021.

Last summer, Hyundai announced a $26 billion investment in its US division.

Part of that $26 billion will be put towards the Atlas robot development program.

Boston Dynamics itself has confirmed that production will begin at its plant this year.

The total number for production is unclear, but they will be used by Hyundai, while some Atlas robots will also be used by Google DeepMind.

And here is the coolest detail about the robot.

It is battery-operated, but that is not a weakness.

In fact, the Atlas robot can autonomously bring itself to a charging station as soon as it feels that the batteries are close to running out.

Make sure to keep an eye out for this; it could truly be game-changing.
