BYD put one of its EVs to the ultimate test by placing it in a -22°F climate chamber before charging it – the results should leave other automakers extremely worried.
It’s a general rule of the car world that extremely cold temperatures don’t bode well for vehicles.
So of course, BYD wanted to be the company that would buck the trend.
And by putting together this stunning demonstration, it made a huge statement.
BYD tested its charging in a -22°F climate chamber
It’s no secret that cold weather can prove to be problematic for cars, and EVs are no exception.
One study found that EV range drops drastically in plunging temperatures.
Expert advice has been dispensed on how to recover range or on which EVs are best to drive in these trying weather conditions.

And who could forget the time 67 electric cars got pushed to their limit in the unforgiving climate of Inner Mongolia?
BYD’s cars did very well in this challenge, but all the cars struggled on some level.
Now, BYD has released a new video demonstrating the charging capabilities of , the 2nd Generation Blade Battery with FLASH Charging Technology.
But it was no ordinary demonstration – this one took place in a freezing cold room where temperatures dropped down to -22°F.

This room looked like a freezer, with ice forming over the car’s body.
At first glance, many would consider this car to be a goner – or at the very least, it’d be supremely difficult to get it charged up again.
But that wasn’t the case, as the car was able to charge from 20 percent up to 97 percent in a mere 12 minutes.

Yes, you read that right.
For context, that’s only three minutes longer than at room temperature.
The internet was unsurprisingly impressed with this demonstration.
“12 minutes is absolutely crazy, even in ‘normal’ conditions, let alone in -30 degrees,” one admirer wrote.
“I’m an EV driver in the Northwest Territories in Canada and I would dearly LOVE this tech here. I hope BYD brings the Z9 here!” another commented.

This company is seemingly going from strength to strength
The Blade Battery 2.0 didn’t need the freezing cold to demonstrate its capabilities, but it doesn’t hurt, right?
It does seem like BYD has been on something of a winning streak lately.
Whether it’s withstanding the force of a 141ft palm tree or surpassing Tesla as the world’s biggest EV seller, the Chinese company seems to riding a wave of great press recently.
